What furniture companies-exporters started actively increasing export sales of their products during the ongoing war due to the forced curtailment of the domestic market has become a trendy feature of the furniture industry. Newcomers – companies for which export was not an urgent need before – are now forced to pave the way to foreign markets. This has now become the case.<\/p>\n

Among such newcomers is the Zhytomyr company “Mobilir”,<\/a> with whose owner Dmytro Murashevskyi we had a conversation about its functioning in the conditions of martial law. Developing, in particular, the topic of exports, he said:<\/p>\n

– Due to certain reasons, the company did not have to join the group of colleagues who, with the assistance of the Ukrainian Association of Furniture Manufacturers, took part in last year’s trade mission to the UK, but their market does not cease to attract us. Our goal is to expand our presence in the United Kingdom, where we have been selling our products since 2022. We managed to find a way out on their market on our own. Through a Ukrainian who has long lived there and has a business. He also showed interest in our products. If it weren’t for the war, this would have happened sooner. But with its beginning, the negotiations stalled for a while – the counterparty there was frightened by the risks. When our defenders drove the enemy out of three regions in the first year of the war, it became easier to negotiate. And the first deliveries did not delay.<\/p>\n

– Is it furniture?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– Not yet. Furniture components, more specifically – facades, which we have long satisfied the needs of domestic furniture makers. Unfortunately, these needs have decreased significantly due to the war. Now these components are also used by a British company that manufactures wood products.<\/p>\n

– Having learned from you that the company has not only reached its pre-war profits but even exceeded them, we state this fact as very encouraging for the UAFM, because so far not many of our members can attest to that. Was the establishment of export sales responsible for this result?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– I would say: it contributed to some extent to this result, because the sales volumes of furniture facades still have not reached the pre-war level. But “Mobilir”<\/a> is a multi-disciplinary company, we produce not only furniture components but also finished furniture and other wood products. It was last year’s ever-increasing demand for them in the domestic market that provided a significant share of such growth. Various organizers are selling quite well now too.<\/p>\n

Plus, we dared to take on comprehensive projects, because we have sufficient production capabilities to work “turnkey”: we can work not only with wood materials but also with metal, artificial stone, plastic. These are both private orders and B2B projects \u2013 gas stations, restaurants, retail establishments \u2013 which we implement in all regions of the country.<\/p>\n

– Has the company’s versatility not faltered amid the ever-increasing shortage of skilled workers?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– Not yet: we still manage to find replacements for mobilized employees. We have a small team, so every vacancy is noticeable. Recruitment, training and rotation of personnel has already become a continuous process.<\/p>\n

– Business leaders and owners are also not immune from mobilization. We have a dozen of those who donned military uniforms in our Association as well. Someone is a volunteer, someone is mobilized. There are examples when mobilized businessmen were replaced by their wives, taking over the operational management of companies. If the Motherland calls you as well, will this significantly affect the “well-being” of the company?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– I’m sure it will be very noticeable. But not to the extent that it would threaten the existence of the company. I had a man well prepared for this case, but he is also at the front now. We’ll have to think of something with my partner-co-owner in such a case.<\/p>\n

– Now, when the company is on the rise, which is evident from your story, there are opportunities for further development. Do you have any plans in this regard?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– Of course. The need for development is the key to a successful future for any business. We are aimed at standardizing our furniture products for the possibility of mass production. Funds will be found – again, with personnel it is more difficult. In this case, we are already talking about designers and engineers. We will have to involve freelancers. There are those with whom we already have experience of partnership cooperation.<\/p>\n

– When can the company be ready for mass production of furniture? And what kind of furniture will it be? Probably case goods?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– Yes. Cabinets, chests of drawers, nightstands, as well as tables, beds. But not kitchens yet. This is a plan for this year, unless the war once again becomes an obstacle.<\/p>\n\n\t\t
