Research on the furniture and wood processing sectors of Ukraine

The study on the furniture and wood processing sectors of Ukraine was prepared by the Entrepreneurship and Export Promotion Office and the national project Diia.Business, commissioned by the Ukrainian Association of Furniture Manufacturers. The report includes insights into the macroeconomic environment, foreign trade, and the results of a business survey on the current state of the industry, expectations, and key challenges, collected directly from UAFM member companies.

The survey was conducted between March 2 and March 15, 2026, with a total of 106 respondents.

Industry Overview and Macroeconomic Indicators

According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, in 2024 the number of active enterprises in the wood processing sector exceeded 11.5 thousand. The highest concentration of businesses is observed in Zhytomyr (1,096), Lviv (992), and Ivano-Frankivsk (949) regions.

The number of active enterprises in the furniture sector exceeded 7.8 thousand. The largest concentration is in Kyiv city (1,104), Lviv region (824), and Kyiv region (763).

Foreign Trade

In 2025, the main importers of Ukrainian products under group 44 “Wood and articles of wood” were Poland (19%), Romania (9%), and Germany (9%). The highest average annual export growth over the past five years (2021–2025) was recorded in the following categories:

  • 4404 Hoopwood — 30%

  • 4412 Plywood, veneered panels, and similar laminated wood — 19%

  • 4401 Fuel wood (logs, billets, branches, etc.) — 6%

Key export markets for Ukraine under group 94 “Furniture” in 2025 were Poland (27%) and Germany (20%). The highest average annual export growth over the past five years (2021–2025) was recorded in:

  • 9402 Medical, surgical, dental, or veterinary furniture — 32%

  • 9405 Lamps and lighting equipment — 9%

  • 9403 Other furniture and parts thereof — 4%

The vast majority of foreign trade operations are carried out by road transport (80–99%, depending on the category).

Business Survey Results

Approximately 62% of surveyed companies reported an increase in sales, although for most it did not exceed 20%. A decline in sales was reported by around 15–18% of respondents.

Businesses are generally optimistic about 2026: 65–70% expect growth, while 18–20% believe the situation will remain unchanged.

The main challenges identified by respondents include the unpredictability of the situation in Ukraine and the domestic market (70–75%), labor shortages (65–70%), and insufficient domestic demand (40–45%).
