Negative consequences of the border blockade by Poland for the Ukrainian furniture industry

The blockade of Poland’s borders for Ukrainian carriers is having a significant negative impact on furniture manufacturers in Ukraine. This decision is leading to serious obstacles in exporting furniture to external markets, particularly to Poland, which is one of the main consumers of Ukrainian furniture products.

One of the most important problems faced by Ukrainian furniture manufacturers due to the border blockade is delays in deliveries. Delays in the delivery of raw materials and finished products lead to disruptions in production schedules and loss of orders. This, in turn, can lead to a decrease in production volumes and loss of profits for companies.

It is also important to note that the border blockade is causing an increase in logistics costs for Ukrainian furniture exporters. They are forced to seek alternative delivery routes, which may be longer and more expensive. This leads to an increase in overall production costs and, ultimately, may undermine the competitiveness of Ukrainian furniture companies in the international market.

Moreover, the negative impact of the border blockade may spread to the entire woodworking industry in Ukraine. Delays in supplies may also affect the operation of other parts of the supply chain, such as material suppliers and distribution companies.

We surveyed members of the Ukrainian Furniture Manufacturers Association regarding the existing and anticipated consequences they have faced due to the border blockade.

50% of respondents indicated that the border blockade by Polish carriers has led to the termination of medium and long-term contracts.

When asked, “If the border blockade situation is resolved by the end of March 2024, to what extent will you be able to restore production capacity?” 6% of respondents said they would not be able to restore it, and nearly 27% said they would only be able to restore it by 50%.

On a positive note, 97% of respondents did not lay off any employees due to the border blockade.

And 94% are optimistic about not stopping the company’s operations, even if the situation is not resolved by the end of April 2024. However, 6% of those surveyed will not be able to sustain such a prolonged stagnation and will be forced to completely stop operations if the borders are not unblocked by the end of April 2024.

To solve this problem, it is necessary to react quickly and establish constructive dialogue between the governments of Ukraine and Poland. It is necessary to find compromised solutions that will ensure the free flow of goods across borders, including furniture products. Additionally, it is important to develop domestic logistics infrastructure and seek alternative supply routes to reduce dependence on Polish carriers.

The Ukrainian furniture industry has great potential for development in international markets, and the negative impact of the border blockade may hinder the realization of this potential. Therefore, it is important to take effective measures to ensure the normal functioning of this industry and maintain its competitiveness in the international market.

Together with the Ukrainian Association of Woodworking Enterprises, on behalf of the entire woodworking industry, we call for effective decisions to be made to unblock the borders as soon as possible so that businesses can work towards Ukraine’s victory.
