“UAFM in the face”: an interview with Sergei Stefan, co-founder and head of the furniture factory “Bassa”

The young company has already become an example for others

Bassa Furniture Factory, a Ukrainian manufacturer of cabinet interior furniture, was established in 2017. One of the co-founders and its current head, Serhiy Stefan, said that it was a trigger for the creation of a furniture factory by a group of entrepreneurs.

– The Bassa Factory was established by five co-founders, each of whom was engaged in entrepreneurship in various fields, one of which was construction. It was the insufficient number of conscientious contractors in the furniture industry at that time that led to the idea of creating their own furniture production. Another reason was the desire to bring the Ukrainian furniture industry to a higher level in order to start competing with world brands.

The difficulty was that none of the founders had previously dealt directly with the furniture industry, with its technology, so building a business in this area was a real challenge for us all. We grew gradually: we started with a few people, but in three years we had more than eighty team members. In general, we say that our employees are our big family, which is an extraordinary value of the factory. Each of its members is a unique master of their craft, each feels part of a large family.

In 2018, the employees of the factory were trained at the well-known UAFM School of Furniture Business Management. It was there that we learned about lean production and, having started to implement it in our production, we felt that there are significant changes in work processes. A year ago, we enlisted the support of a lean consultant, and it was from that time that the stage of lean implementation began not only in production but also in the factory as a whole. We always wanted to break stereotypes and create something perfect, and even before the introduction of lean, we worked with such a mood. The main stereotype: that an individual furniture manufacturer cannot successfully establish economical production, because its products are not serial. We decided to prove that it is possible, and the results that we managed to achieve in a relatively short time, we are willing to share with fellow furniture makers during open lin-tours to our factory. This is a sign of extraordinary trust from our colleagues, we are happy for everyone and everyone who visits the factory.

As for the future of the factory, I can say with confidence that we started to develop extremely fast, sometimes this pace is even surprising, but we have been going for so long. We do not abandon the idea of entering the world market and creating mass production.

In the process of creating the factory, we formed its mission and vision. It was based on the desire to develop a powerful, modern and automated factory in five years – a benchmark. We are now three years old, and I can say with confidence that we have not betrayed our aspirations. Our factory is one of the most modern in the furniture industry in Ukraine. Thanks to the technical equipment, which is constantly updated and increased, we have closed the entire production cycle, so we are fully confident and responsible for the high quality of our products.

On July 14, 2021, representatives of the Bassa factory together with Olga Peretyatko, Lean coach and consultant, Maksym Popovych, co-founder and project manager of ISTO studio will share their own experience in design – brunch UAFM.
