“UAFM in the face”: Alexander Mats, founder and CEO of “Shvejnik” told his story of cooperation with furniture makers

Although “Shvejnik” does not sew, furniture manufacturers need it

If the Uzhhorod company “Shvejnik” is a member of the Ukrainian Association of Furniture Manufacturers, it is clear that it is related to furniture. So. But, despite its unambiguous name, it does not perform sewing work – it sells sewing equipment, spare parts for it, and related things for sewing.

Alexander Mats, the founder and current head of the company, being a professional in this technique (for a long time he worked as a mechanic in the garment industry), at one time – or rather in 2003 – decided to start his own supply and trade business. It was obvious to him that the domestic market needed what he intended to do: although it did not lack sewing equipment at all, it lacked quality. However, first of all, there was a lack of spare parts for those sewing machines that were in operation. Upholstered furniture manufacturers have suffered particularly from this. So Oleksandr Mats and his “Shvejnik” undertook to correct this situation. Initially, they focused on European-made spare parts, on the supply of quality needles for sewing machines, and then, as they developed, they began to supply sewing and cutting machines.

Today, the company offers sewing and cutting equipment from the most reputable manufacturers in this field and, above all, the German company “Vetron”, although its range of equipment is more than a dozen well-known brands.

– We have long and meticulously selected suppliers, analyzing the quality of sewing equipment of various brands and its functionality. Several brands were chosen, but they decided to have Vetron sewing equipment as a priority. At one of the international exhibitions we managed to get in touch with the company’s representatives, and dealer relations began.

The machines of this level that it offers today, without exaggeration, are a unique offer on the market. First of all, the level of automation, so they are almost out of competition. It must be acknowledged that Ukrainian Shvejnik, including those working in furniture, practically do not know that there is already a sewing technique of this level of perfection, so our task is also promotional.

The most advanced Vetron models are programmable. This provides users of such sewing machines not only greater comfort, but also higher productivity. The machine can be programmed for different sewing operations that are required, and when switching from one operation to another you do not need to stop to reconfigure the machine – just press the button, and it will automatically adjust to another operation. That is, it will choose another desired stitch length, a different level of thread tension, foot pressure (in non-programmed machines, the Shvejnik performs such settings manually for ten minutes). The necessary settings are also made automatically in case of change of thickness of a flooring, ie stitching layers, – says Alexander.

– Can we say that such a level of perfection of “Vetron” sewing machines provides them with such a level of versatility that the user no longer needs any other sewing machines?

– No. Because there is a separate family of two-needle machines that simultaneously make – mainly for decorative purposes – two parallel seams. When there is a need for it, then a single-needle machine will not work. The versatility of single-needle Vetron machines is that they perform high-quality and high-performance stitching of a wide range of materials in a wide range of their thickness. That is, they combine the capabilities of machines for flashing and so-called light and heavy materials.

– There is an opinion that in the field of modern sewing equipment the Japanese are still ahead…

– Japanese sewing equipment is really cool, it is also in the range of “Shvejnik”, but to say that Japanese machines give a head start to programmable machines “Vetron”, I would not dare.

– Sewing departments of furniture productions cannot do without cutting equipment, which you also supply and which is also the most modern.

– If upholstered furniture manufacturers really can’t do without sewing machines, then cutting of furniture textiles and leather materials is usually performed by cutters manually with the help of appropriate patterns. To modernize this operation, faster and more accurate, and therefore more economical, cutting, we can also offer appropriate equipment – also German-made, but the company “Kuris”. And also automated and programmable. This is really important. Especially for large productions with large volumes of cutting and sewing works. First, you can program dozens of cutting options, and from one to another, the machine will switch at the touch of a button; secondly, to cut in one pass to it under force and a ten-layer flooring of material.

– Most of your customers are those who buy modern sewing equipment, starting new products, or modernize existing ones?

– The second option. Such is the psychology of man that he always seeks to buy cheaper, ignoring the wisdom that the stingy pay twice. So mostly sewing machines are bought from us by those who were once tempted by cheap Chinese ones, which become scrap metal in two years of operation. Burned, as they say, on this and realized that it is necessary to turn to the “Shvejnik”.
